Room A
Tuesday, May 06, 2014

This weeks Bible story comes from Luke 24.

The Ascension
50 Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. 51 While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. 52 And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually in the temple blessing God.

PDO Kids Of The Kingdom Will Learn:
One day Jesus will come back. The angels told the disciples that Jesus was in heaven and that one day He would come back (for them and us) Until then, we (just like the disciples) are to be busy doing the job He gave us!He wants us to go out into the WHOLE WORLD and make disciples. That means that He wants us to go around talking to people about Jesus

What the Story Tells Us (Adults)
Jesus ascended into heaven triumphantly, having completed all that was necessary to save mankind.
He instructed His disciples to spread this saving message to all the world by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Today we continued  with the class broken up into a different groups.  This is to help those going to preschool in the fall an idea of how centers may be ran in the classroom.  It went really well and the students had a lot of fun doing lots of different activities.

Free Choice Play
This is the time in the morning that as we are coming into the classroom we are given the opportunity to explore the room, play with our friends and get ready for a fun filled day in PDO!

Butterfly Books
Today we made our very own butterfly book about the life cycle of a butterfly.  We have been learning a song about the cycle of a butterfly set to the tune of Mary Had  A Little Lamb.  So today we made the book to go along with it.  As we did this activity we started with us reviewing the song and then we did each page and then used our books to sing the song!  I was amazed how many of the students were able to tell me what came next.  It is so exciting as a teacher to see students who love to learn and when you are least expecting it to tell you what comes next.  I had a lot of fun doing this center with the students today and they had a lot of fun too.  Lots of smiles and looks of pride when they were able to tell me what comes next.  I hope you enjoy the book they worked so hard to make!

NUMBER 10
We got to use special stickers that were designated for girls and boys.  We had to put 10 stickers onto the number 10.  Mrs. Burke helped us count to 10 and showed us how to count to 10 with our fingers.  After we were done with our stickers we practiced counting our 1o stickers.  This activity allowed us to work on our counting skills, number recognition, fine motor skills by taking the stickers off the paper and putting them on the dots on the number 10.

Rainbow Bingo Daubers
Today we decorated a rainbow using the colors red, orange, yellow, green and blue.  We had to use the right color on the right circle to make our rainbows oh so colorful.  Mrs. Linneman helped us work on identifying our colors and talked about the different colors in the rainbow.  The bingo daubers allowed us to work on our self-control skills as well as pre-writing skills of holding a writing tool.  We also worked on not pressing down to hard and going up and down.

MY NAME BEGINS WITH......
Ask your child if they know what letter their name begins with.  Mrs. Burke helped the students today with bingo daubers and tracing the outline of the first letter of their name.  This is a great way to introduce what the letter looks like and to become familiar with the letter and how it is formed.

BEAR COLOR MATCH/BUTTERFLY COLOR MATCH
Since we are spending the month of May reviewing all of our colors of the rainbow we have been busy sorting colors in different ways.  This week we are practicing sorting bears into different colored bowls.  We are also identifying our colors by decorating a butterfly by putting the correct colored pom pom on the butterfly we are given.  These are both great ways to work on pre-math skills of sorting and identification.  It also is a great way to work on colors and our fine motor skills.  We also talked about what our favorite color is.

Cutting Skills
Today we were given a colored strip and we had to cut on the black line and then we had to glue it on the giant butterfly that we are making that is going to hang in our classroom.  This activity allowed us to work on our cutting skills as well as color identification and gluing skills.  Be sure to check out our pretty butterfly we made.

DIAMOND COLLAGE
Each child was given different colored diamonds and then they had to practice using a glue bottle to glue on their diamond shapes.  This allowed us to become familiar with the shape of a diamond, what color our diamonds were, and counting our 4 diamonds.   We also had to use our hand muscles to squeeze the glue onto the paper and to remember that less is more!

Bible Story
Today was about Jesus going to heaven so we worked on our sensory skills as we glue on cotton balls on a page with Jesus rising up to heaven.  We talked about how even though Jesus is in Heaven he is always with us right in our hearts.  Using the cotton balls was a great way to talk about soft and light as well as what happens when you use to much glue and it gets on your fingers it can be sticky!

BROWN BEAR BROWN BEAR
To go along with our review of colors and our Eric Carle theme we watched a short video of Brown Bear Brown Bear we were able to talk about all different colored animals that we saw.  It was a lot of fun to see all the different animals!

Celebrating the Week of the Young Child!

Today we got to have special Popsicles to help us celebrate the wonderful children we have at Zion!  They were yummy:)

Music Movement/Searching For Bugs

Today we listened to the Butterfly Waltz again and practiced being butterflies we talked about how delicate the wings of a butterfly are so we practiced flapping our wings nice a slow.  We also as transition activity to go outside we got to search for the bugs in the sensory table.  Each student was called up to search for a bug once they found their bug they identified the color and took it to Mrs. Burke who was waiting at the door to go outside.

Music and Movement
We had fun doing some new songs that we started hearing last week.  They all have to do with self-regulation and following directions.  One song asked us to fall down and go to sleep I think some of them would have gone to sleep if I would have let them.  We did a lot of jumping and shaking today!

 Where does your animal live?
Ask your child tonight what kind of animal they had today and where it lives.  We are getting really good at this game and they are getting really good at saying some of the names of the animals which can be tricky at times!

CIRCLE TIME BOARDS and STORIES
Today during Jesus time we talked about the story of Jesus going into heaven and how important he still is even though he is not physically here.  We had fun working on our colors with our Butterfly flannel board story and our finger play about the Five Little Birdies.  Our color board consist of all the colors we have learned over the year along with a few shapes and our number board had a tricky pattern to it but we did a great job at guessing what color came next!  Mr. Weather Frog saw the return of his sandals, shorts and sunscreen and we read some great books today as well.   We worked on our letter sounds, sang our ABC's and sang our Butterfly song that we have been learning

Special Guest/Outside Play
We had some special guests in our classroom today.  To go along with our study of butterflies and their life cycles.  I brought in some caterpillars from my back yard.  Some of the students were really fascinated by them.  I had three of them in my container and hopefully they will be back on Thursday to visit.  We did play outside today for a long period of time.  I had lots of friends that did not have on appropriate footwear which in turn made for some unhappy friends who had a hard time playing outside.

What an exciting day we had today.  I really had a great time with the students today as I do everyday and it makes me sad to know our time together is just about over.   I hope you are able to enjoy this beautiful weather together and I look forward to seeing everyone on Thursday for some more exciting adventures in PDO!  Have a great night

Mrs. Horn
