Room A
Thursday, May 08, 2014

This weeks Bible story comes from Luke 24.

The Ascension
50 Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them. 51 While he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up into heaven. 52 And they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually in the temple blessing God.

PDO Kids Of The Kingdom Will Learn:
One day Jesus will come back. The angels told the disciples that Jesus was in heaven and that one day He would come back (for them and us) Until then, we (just like the disciples) are to be busy doing the job He gave us!He wants us to go out into the WHOLE WORLD and make disciples. That means that He wants us to go around talking to people about Jesus

What the Story Tells Us (Adults)
Jesus ascended into heaven triumphantly, having completed all that was necessary to save mankind.
He instructed His disciples to spread this saving message to all the world by the power of the Holy Spirit.

FOLDERS
Today your child's folder contains a butterfly story board.  We have been learning the life cycle of a butterfly, and it is set to the tune of Mary Had  A Little Lamb.  See if your child can read/sing you their story board they made.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I have teaching them about butterflies! Also there is a special Mother's Day card that your child made for you.

Today we continued  with the class broken up into a different groups.  This is to help those going to preschool in the fall an idea of how centers may be ran in the classroom.  It went really well and the students had a lot of fun doing lots of different activities.

Free Choice Play
This is the time in the morning that as we are coming into the classroom we are given the opportunity to explore the room, play with our friends and get ready for a fun filled day in PDO! We at this time work on our social skills such as asking to take turns, sharing toys and cooperating with our friends.

My Name begins with.....
Ask your child tonight if they know what their name begins with.  We have been working on the first letter of our name all semester.  Today we practiced using the bingo daubers to trace the outline of our name.  This is a great way for you child to become familiar with what the letter looks like and and how it is made.  It is also a way for your child to work on the prewriting skills as they are tracing the outline of the letter as well as using a writing tool to make that letter.  We also practiced saying the letter of our first name today as we looked at our letters.

RAINBOW CLOUDS/JESUS TIME
Today we were given a white cloud and the primary colors of the rainbow and a picture of Jesus.  We had to use our hand muscles to squeeze the glue out to glue our colored strips on our cloud.  Once we had the strips of our rainbow glued onto our cloud we glued a our picture of Jesus on there to help us remember that even though Jesus is in heaven he is always in our hearts and with us where ever we go. We were able to work on identifying the different colors of the rainbow and work on our fine motor skills as we squeezed the glue and then had to pick up our colored strip and glue it onto the cloud.

CUTTING WITH SCISSORS
We have practiced our cutting skills all year long and today we continued that practice by cutting a strip of paper that had black lines on the paper to cut on.  Once we had cut our strip of paper we decorated a Spring flower by using our fine motor skills and hand muscles to squeeze the glue bottle to get the glue out and onto our flower.  After we had our flower decorated we had to glue our green stem and two leaves onto our flower.  We have some pretty Spring flowers.  I have been so happy to see how well all the students are doing with the scissors, not matter where they are at with cutting they are doing really well and by no means is this a skill they should of mastered this year.

BUTTERFLY STORY BOARD
This month we have been studying the life cycle of a butterfly. We have been learning a cute little song that is set to the tune of Mary Had A Little Lamb.  On Tuesday we made a book to go along with the song.  Today we made a story board about the the song.  The song is on the back of your child's paper that they are bringing home today ask them if they can sing the song using the pictures.  This activity was a lot of fun to see how much they have learned in the past two weeks about butterflies and how much they have retained is amazing!  This activity was a great pre-reading activity as we had to have a sequence order and had to make sure it was in the correct order we also had to use our fine motor skills to glue the pieces in the right order and stamp them as well.

SORTING AND COUNTING
Today we sorted and counted colored bears into different bowls.  We also had a lot of fun with Mrs. Burke working on different patterns with the bears.  This activity was great for pre-math skills and color identification as well as our counting skills.  We have some really great counters in this class!

NUMBER 10
We worked on counting to 10 again today.  Mrs. Burke helped us count our 10 fingers and we then had to find the number 10 on our diamond paper with some special girl and boy stickers.  Not only were we counting to 10 but we worked on recognizing the number 10 and a diamond shape.  We also worked on our fine motor skills as we had to peel the stickers off the sticker sheet and place it on the number 10.

BUTTERFLIES/MUSIC AND MOVEMENT
We practiced again today being delicate butterflies as we listened to the Butterfly Waltz. We waved our special scarves around as if we delicate butterflies flying around.  We talked about the word delicate today as we did on Tuesday ask your child if they can tell you what it means.  We also practiced some self regulation songs where we had to listen to the music and stop and go when they said to do so.  A great way to work on our listening  skills as well as work on self regulation and directions.

OUTSIDE PLAY
God granted us another gorgeous day to play outside!  We had so much fun playing with our friends exploring and learning.  PLEASE SEND YOUR CHILD IN APPROPRIATE SHOES AND CLOTHING EVERY DAY.  Closed toed shoes are best for this age group on the playground.

A LITTLE MORE MUSIC and MOVEMENT
We had fun singing the Wheels on the Bus, Shaking our Bodies Down and Clapping our Hands.  Music and Movement has been a big part of our classroom this year.  I firmly believe that this time of day allows a child to become familiar with different types of music, hear music that goes fast or slow, hear songs that are loud and soft.  It also a time that a child is allowed to be as silly and crazy as they want and also allows us to work on body awareness.

BROWN BEAR BROWN BEAR WHAT DO YOU SEE?
To go along with our rainbow theme and Eric Carle books we today watched a video about Brown Bear Brown Bear.  We worked on identifying the different colors and animals in the story.  This was a way of bringing a little technology into our classroom and for the students to work on controlling their bodies and listening to a story in a different way.

MY ANIMAL IS......
Our lunchtime transitions game continues on.  I call the name of an animal, they come place it on the board after they tell me where the animal lives and what sound the animal makes.  We are getting really good at identifying the animals, their homes and sounds.

OUR CIRCLE TIME ACTIVITIES
We did lots of great learning experiences during our circle time from a flannel board story about 5 colorful butterflies to help us identify our colors to Five Little Birdies That Flew Away, a great way to work on our counting skills and our finger muscles.  We worked on singing our ABC's and going through the letter sounds of the alphabet.  We read so great books and sang some songs that we are really getting good at!  We dressed Mr. Weather Frog for the nice warm weather we had today. Identified the colors of the rainbow for the color board and practiced counting to 10 and figuring out the pattern for our 10 butterflies.  We also sang the Life Cycle of a Butterfly again to help us remember what happens.  We read about Jesus going to heaven and singing Jesus Loves Me!

CATERPILLARS!
On Tuesday I had brought in 3 caterpillars I had found at home.  It was a great lead into our discussion and studies of the Life Cycle of a Butterfly.  I brought them back today and while we were outside a few of my friends found another caterpillar we added him to our caterpillar home and talked about the caterpillars and how they felt, what they looked liked, what they were doing and what would happen to them.  What an AWESOME and AMAZING learning experience we had today.  It was so neat to see how interested my little friends were and the questions and responses they had.  It was bittersweet knowing that next week will be our last week together and how much fun I have truly enjoyed having all of them in my classroom.   It was also a great reminder of why I love working and teaching this age group they are so excited to learn and are like little sponges they want to soak it all in and are eager to learn and have new experiences.  Enjoy our pictures below of our Caterpillar experience!

It is hard to believe that school year is quickly upon us.  At this time next week many of us will be done with the PDO program and will be moving onto Preschool  Some of our friends will be returning to the PDO program in the Fall and will be "the big kids".  It has been an amazing ride this year and I am truly sad to see it come to an end.  Today we had a great day learning, talking, singing, running, dancing, playing and exploring PDO days do not get much better than that!  I want to wish all of the Moms, Aunts, and Grandmas of our families a very Happy Mother's Day, I hope your special day is spent with those who love you and shower you with love and hugs.  Without our Mom's life would not be the same that is for sure.  So HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY PDO MOMS, GRANDMAS and AUNTS we love you and all you do for us and your families.  If you do not have a place to worship please consider joining us here at Zion either on Saturday night at 5:00 or on Sunday at 8:00 9:30 or 11:00 we would love for you to join us and make Zion your church home.  God's Blessings to you all and I look foward to seeing you all next week as we close out another great year in PDO!
