Welcome to the month of November. I hope all my little friends had a good time trick or treating last week. As we head into a new month we start a new color (brown) and new shape (the cross) a new number (4) and we are studying during our Jesus time the things that we are most Thankful for. This week we studied the letter "k" and the sounds it makes. Our theme for the next month will be a continuation of the fall season and about Thanksgiving. Please be sure and read all of the information below....
OCTOBER WORK IS COMING HOME!!!
Please be sure to check your child's folder for all of their October work if they were not at school on Tuesday. Somethings were pulled and will be kept for a portfolio that will be given to you in May. You will also find in your child's folder 2 take home projects. You will also find an envelope that has first quarters progress report on how your child is doing.
TAKE HOME PROJECTS
Please be sure to return the cross that is in your child's folder so that we may learn more about your child in our classroom. The other take home project that you will find in your child's folder is asking for a family picture that we may use for one of our activities we will be doing when we are discussing how we are thankful for our families. This only applies to Mrs. Horn's class, the picture will be returned but will be glued on a piece of paper. If you could return the family picture by next week that would be wonderful.
Progress Reports
These were sent home today if you did not receive one on Tuesday. This just gives you an idea of how your child is doing in PDO and what I have seen and observed. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns I will send out the next progress reports the week we come back for Christmas Break. You can email me at hhorn@zionharvester.org

Halloween Candy and School
Please be careful with sending any candy to school with your child for snack or lunch. It needs to peanut free, no gum, no suckers or any candy that requires a child to suck on. This is not only for your child's safety but for the safety of the other children in the class as well. If you are not sure you are best to save it for home.
Clothing
As we start to move into November and the winter months please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for school with warm clothing and proper footwear. Also, we are having lots of our friends working on potty training or are potty trained but are having a very hard time in the bathroom with their pants. It is best to send your child in elastic waisted pants that they can easily pull up and down on their own. This also helps promote independence and a sense of accomplishment if they can do it all on their own. Please make sure your child always has a complete extra outfit in case of accidents, please make sure you include extra underwear (if necessary), extra socks and shoes. Also be sure that all hats, gloves, scarves and coats are labeled with your child's name so that we are able to easily identify whose outerwear belongs to who.
Thanksgiving Food Drive
Each year during the month of November, the students and families of Zion Lutheran School have a wonderful opportunity to give to others. Zion will be hosting a canned/box food drive from November 11th-20th. All of the food donated will be given to the students who attend Concordia Seminary, which is located in St. Louis.
Concordia Seminary is where men go to train and study to become Lutheran pastors. Some of these men and their families are unable to travel home for the holidays and therefore stay on campus during Thanksgiving; the food donated from our school will be given to them so that they may enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving meal. The food that is not used to fill out those Thanksgiving meals for the families will be donated to the Seminary food bank.
During November 11th-20th, you may drop off any canned/box food items in the Sonshine Center Lobby. On the 20th, our Student Council Junior High students will collect all of the canned food and travel over to the Seminary to drop it off.
If you have any questions, please let me know. Thank you!
Please enjoy our day through pictures and if you have any questions you may contact me at hhorn@zionharvester.org.
I love to seeing budding friendships in class and Evan and Kaleb have become good buddies
Scarlett, Isaac and Korrinne were playing store in the housekeeping area.
Sara was busy being and "interior designer" as she played with the doll house
We love to do puzzles. Puzzles are a great way to work on our problem solving skills and to work on our pre math skills
Today we painted a picture of a brown puppy dog
Many of my friends were excited to tell me that they had a dog at home and what color their dog was
As each child came to the center I asked them what they were going to paint a picture of and what color they were going to paint with.
Some of my friends said the color was black which at this age is often mistaken when the color is brown
Painting is a great way for a our students to work on holding a writing tool as well as use their creativity.
As the children would paint I would also ask what a puppy dog would say.
I had some interesting sounds for puppy dogs!
We love to paint and we hope you love the paintings we have brought home
As we began our study of the number 4 we practiced putting 4 fall and thanksgiving stickers on the number 4
Stickers are a great fine motor skill that helps us with our pincer grasp
To help us with the our shape today we painted over a cross with masking tape and the reveal will be displayed in our front foyer next week
As each child worked with the stickers we would help them count to 4.
Transferring the stickers to the number 4 took some work and concentration
Stickers are also a great sensory activity as some students may not like the way they feel sticky on their hands
We talked about the letter "K" today
Be sure to check your child's backpack for their letter "k" coloring sheet
Sarah working on painting over her cross
As we colored our letter K coloring sheet we would talk about the sound it makes and what things begin with the letter K
Will and Rose working on their cross paintings
Noah working on getting those sticky stickers on his number 4
Korrinne and Jacob painting with brown paint to make a cross
Isaac counting to 4
Sophia and Jacob sharing a sheet of stickers to put on the number 4
Nicholas concentrating very hard on coloring his letter K
Evan and Kaleb painting together
Evan and Kaleb doing stickers together
Sophia showing me how paint she has on her paintbrush.
Sarah choosing what sticker she wants to put on her number 4
Nicholas and Amelija covering their crosses with the brown paint
We decided today that Mr. WeatherFrog needed his hat, gloves and scarf to head outside and play
Today during Jesus time we talked about how we are thankful for our families. The children did a great job telling me what family members they were thankful for. As you can see we have a cross for Jesus because a student told me that Jesus was part of their family too.
We practiced counting to 4 and figuring out what comes next in our pattern
Our Brown board for the month!
We read a story about and Owl who couldn't find any friends
We had fun "building" our own houses to help us start our thankful books for the month of November
The children decided what their houses needed.
Some needed a door and one window
Where others needed a door and two windows
Some had windows on top
Others had windows to the side
We used glue to make sure they all stayed in place
As the children decided what they needed for their houses I would ask what color the window and doors would be
This was a review of the color red and blue
I also would ask them how many doors they had on their house
and how many windows to help with a review of 1 and 2
During our second circle we made a Turkey to help us work on our colors and to count to 4 as the turkey had 4 feathers on each side of his body
We read the book Corduroy's Thanksgiving
We worked recognizing the letter K and saying the K sound like in Kite
We sang the alphabet and and practiced our letter sounds
After our second circle we had fun playing with brown play dough
Sarah worked on cutting on a straight line and stopping at the cross
Korrinne and Amelija cutting on the line to the cross
Gwen concentrating on her cutting skills
I have many friends that are starting to cut all on their own and are doing great
We then headed outside and were quite surprised with how nice it was outside
It is hat and coat season so please be sure to send both with your child everyday
We will head outside as much as the weather permits us too.
Outdoor play is very important at this age
Our PDO friends having a great time outside
Riding on the bikes is fun for all
As well as the cars
Evan playing with the concrete mixer
Noah loves to push the cars
Sophia out for a drive
Gwen doing a little gymnastics on the climber
Some of us have grown so much from this time last year it so much fun to watch them play outside
Isaac using his leg muscles to get around on the car
We headed inside and sang some songs and added a new one to our list the DINOSAUR CHOMP!
We then read about all the different leaves we see in the fall and had lunch and after lunch we had time for a story called Acorns EveryWhere!
We also worked on our pattern skills and figuring out which tower we built was the tallest and shortest.
WOW! We had a busy day and we learned and experienced some many fun things. A few of my friends seem to have left their listening ears at home and I know they will return next week. Please take time this weekend to worship our God. We would love to see you in worship at Zion we offer several services. Saturday at 5:00 and Sunday at 9:30 and 11:00. Please consider making Zion your church home. Have a wonderful weekend and I look forward to seeing everyone next week. God's Blessings to all my families.
